  64. <a name="Compiling-GDB-in-Another-Directory"></a>
  65. <h3 class="section">C.3 Compiling <small>GDB</small> in Another Directory</h3>
  66. <p>If you want to run <small>GDB</small> versions for several host or target machines,
  67. you need a different <code>gdb</code> compiled for each combination of
  68. host and target. <samp>configure</samp> is designed to make this easy by
  69. allowing you to generate each configuration in a separate subdirectory,
  70. rather than in the source directory. If your <code>make</code> program
  71. handles the &lsquo;<samp>VPATH</samp>&rsquo; feature (<small>GNU</small> <code>make</code> does), running
  72. <code>make</code> in each of these directories builds the <code>gdb</code>
  73. program specified there.
  74. </p>
  75. <p>To build <code>gdb</code> in a separate directory, run <samp>configure</samp>
  76. with the &lsquo;<samp>--srcdir</samp>&rsquo; option to specify where to find the source.
  77. (You also need to specify a path to find <samp>configure</samp>
  78. itself from your working directory. If the path to <samp>configure</samp>
  79. would be the same as the argument to &lsquo;<samp>--srcdir</samp>&rsquo;, you can leave out
  80. the &lsquo;<samp>--srcdir</samp>&rsquo; option; it is assumed.)
  81. </p>
  82. <p>For example, with version 10.1.90.20201028-git, you can build <small>GDB</small> in a
  83. separate directory for a Sun 4 like this:
  84. </p>
  85. <div class="smallexample">
  86. <pre class="smallexample">cd gdb-10.1.90.20201028-git
  87. mkdir ../gdb-sun4
  88. cd ../gdb-sun4
  89. ../gdb-10.1.90.20201028-git/configure
  90. make
  91. </pre></div>
  92. <p>When <samp>configure</samp> builds a configuration using a remote source
  93. directory, it creates a tree for the binaries with the same structure
  94. (and using the same names) as the tree under the source directory. In
  95. the example, you&rsquo;d find the Sun 4 library <samp>libiberty.a</samp> in the
  96. directory <samp>gdb-sun4/libiberty</samp>, and <small>GDB</small> itself in
  97. <samp>gdb-sun4/gdb</samp>.
  98. </p>
  99. <p>Make sure that your path to the <samp>configure</samp> script has just one
  100. instance of <samp>gdb</samp> in it. If your path to <samp>configure</samp> looks
  101. like <samp>../gdb-10.1.90.20201028-git/gdb/configure</samp>, you are configuring only
  102. one subdirectory of <small>GDB</small>, not the whole package. This leads to
  103. build errors about missing include files such as <samp>bfd/bfd.h</samp>.
  104. </p>
  105. <p>One popular reason to build several <small>GDB</small> configurations in separate
  106. directories is to configure <small>GDB</small> for cross-compiling (where
  107. <small>GDB</small> runs on one machine&mdash;the <em>host</em>&mdash;while debugging
  108. programs that run on another machine&mdash;the <em>target</em>).
  109. You specify a cross-debugging target by
  110. giving the &lsquo;<samp>--target=<var>target</var></samp>&rsquo; option to <samp>configure</samp>.
  111. </p>
  112. <p>When you run <code>make</code> to build a program or library, you must run
  113. it in a configured directory&mdash;whatever directory you were in when you
  114. called <samp>configure</samp> (or one of its subdirectories).
  115. </p>
  116. <p>The <code>Makefile</code> that <samp>configure</samp> generates in each source
  117. directory also runs recursively. If you type <code>make</code> in a source
  118. directory such as <samp>gdb-10.1.90.20201028-git</samp> (or in a separate configured
  119. directory configured with &lsquo;<samp>--srcdir=<var>dirname</var>/gdb-10.1.90.20201028-git</samp>&rsquo;), you
  120. will build all the required libraries, and then build GDB.
  121. </p>
  122. <p>When you have multiple hosts or targets configured in separate
  123. directories, you can run <code>make</code> on them in parallel (for example,
  124. if they are NFS-mounted on each of the hosts); they will not interfere
  125. with each other.
  126. </p>
