65.
E.13.2 Protocol Basics

 66.
 67.
The File-I/O protocol uses the
F
packet as the request as well
 68. as reply packet. Since a File-I/O system call can only occur when
 69. GDB is waiting for a response from the continuing or stepping target,
 70. the File-I/O request is a reply that GDB has to expect as a result
 71. of a previous ‘<samp>C</samp>’, ‘<samp>c</samp>’, ‘<samp>S</samp>’ or ‘<samp>s</samp>’ packet.
 72. This
F
packet contains all information needed to allow GDB
 73. to call the appropriate host system call:
 74.

 75.

 76.
A unique identifier for the requested system call.
 77.

All parameters to the system call. Pointers are given as addresses
 78. in the target memory address space. Pointers to strings are given as
 79. pointer/length pair. Numerical values are given as they are.
 80. Numerical control flags are given in a protocol-specific representation.
 81.

 82.
At this point, GDB has to perform the following actions.
 83.

 84.

 85.
If the parameters include pointer values to data needed as input to a
 86. system call, GDB requests this data from the target with a
 87. standard
m
packet request. This additional communication has to be
 88. expected by the target implementation and is handled as any other
m

 89. packet.
 90.

GDB translates all value from protocol representation to host
 91. representation as needed. Datatypes are coerced into the host types.
 92.

GDB calls the system call.
 93.

It then coerces datatypes back to protocol representation.
 94.

If the system call is expected to return data in buffer space specified
 95. by pointer parameters to the call, the data is transmitted to the
 96. target using a
M
or
X
packet. This packet has to be expected
 97. by the target implementation and is handled as any other
M
or
X

 98. packet.
 99.

 100.
Eventually GDB replies with another
F
packet which contains all
 101. necessary information for the target to continue. This at least contains
 102.

 103.

 104.
Return value.
 105.

errno
, if has been changed by the system call.
 106.

“Ctrl-C” flag.
 107.

 108.
After having done the needed type and value coercion, the target continues
 109. the latest continue or step action.
 110.
