65.
20.5.3 Putting it All Together

 66.
 67.
In summary, when your program is ready to debug, you must follow these
 68. steps.
 69.

 70.

 71.
Make sure you have defined the supporting low-level routines
 72. (see What You Must Do for the Stub):
 73.

 74.

getDebugChar
,
putDebugChar
,
 75.
flush_i_cache
,
memset
,
exceptionHandler
.
 76.

 77.

Insert these lines in your program’s startup code, before the main
 78. procedure is called:
 79.

 80.
set_debug_traps();
 81. breakpoint();
 82.

 83.
On some machines, when a breakpoint trap is raised, the hardware
 84. automatically makes the PC point to the instruction after the
 85. breakpoint. If your machine doesn’t do that, you may need to adjust
 86.
handle_exception
to arrange for it to return to the instruction
 87. after the breakpoint on this first invocation, so that your program
 88. doesn’t keep hitting the initial breakpoint instead of making
 89. progress.
 90.

 91.

For the 680x0 stub only, you need to provide a variable called
 92.
exceptionHook
. Normally you just use:
 93.

 94.
void (*exceptionHook)() = 0;
 95.

 96.
but if before calling
set_debug_traps
, you set it to point to a
 97. function in your program, that function is called when
 98.
GDB
continues after stopping on a trap (for example, bus
 99. error). The function indicated by
exceptionHook
is called with
 100. one parameter: an
int
which is the exception number.
 101.

 102.

Compile and link together: your program, the GDB debugging stub for
 103. your target architecture, and the supporting subroutines.
 104.

Make sure you have a serial connection between your target machine and
 105. the GDB host, and identify the serial port on the host.
 106.

Download your program to your target machine (or get it there by
 107. whatever means the manufacturer provides), and start it.
 108.

Start GDB on the host, and connect to the target
 109. (see Connecting to a Remote Target).
 110.
