  69. <h4 class="subsection">6.2.2 Variable <code>FORMAT</code> expressions</h4>
  70. <a name="index-FORMAT"></a>
  71. <p>A variable <code>FORMAT</code> expression is format statement which includes
  72. angle brackets enclosing a Fortran expression: <code>FORMAT(I&lt;N&gt;)</code>. GNU
  73. Fortran does not support this legacy extension. The effect of variable
  74. format expressions can be reproduced by using the more powerful (and
  75. standard) combination of internal output and string formats. For example,
  76. replace a code fragment like this:
  77. </p>
  78. <div class="smallexample">
  79. <pre class="smallexample"> WRITE(6,20) INT1
  80. 20 FORMAT(I&lt;N+1&gt;)
  81. </pre></div>
  82. <p>with the following:
  83. </p>
  84. <div class="smallexample">
  85. <pre class="smallexample">c Variable declaration
  86. CHARACTER(LEN=20) FMT
  87. c
  88. c Other code here...
  89. c
  90. WRITE(FMT,'(&quot;(I&quot;, I0, &quot;)&quot;)') N+1
  91. WRITE(6,FMT) INT1
  92. </pre></div>
  93. <p>or with:
  94. </p>
  95. <div class="smallexample">
  96. <pre class="smallexample">c Variable declaration
  97. CHARACTER(LEN=20) FMT
  98. c
  99. c Other code here...
  100. c
  101. WRITE(FMT,*) N+1
  102. WRITE(6,&quot;(I&quot; // ADJUSTL(FMT) // &quot;)&quot;) INT1
  103. </pre></div>
