72.
73.
GCC provides three magic constants that hold the name of the current
74. function as a string. In C++11 and later modes, all three are treated
75. as constant expressions and can be used in
constexpr
constexts.
76. The first of these constants is
__func__
, which is part of
77. the C99 standard:
78.

79.
The identifier
__func__
is implicitly declared by the translator
80. as if, immediately following the opening brace of each function
81. definition, the declaration
82.

83.

84.
static const char __func__[] = "function-name";
85.

86.
appeared, where function-name is the name of the lexically-enclosing
87. function. This name is the unadorned name of the function. As an
88. extension, at file (or, in C++, namespace scope),
__func__

89. evaluates to the empty string.
90.

91.

__FUNCTION__
is another name for
__func__
, provided for
92. backward compatibility with old versions of GCC.
93.

94.
In C,
__PRETTY_FUNCTION__
is yet another name for
95.
__func__
, except that at file (or, in C++, namespace scope),
96. it evaluates to the string
"top level"
. In addition, in C++,
97.
__PRETTY_FUNCTION__
contains the signature of the function as
98. well as its bare name. For example, this program:
99.

100.

101.
extern "C" int printf (const char *, ...);
102. class a {
103. public:
104. void sub (int i)
105. {
106. printf ("__FUNCTION__ = %s\n", __FUNCTION__);
107. printf ("__PRETTY_FUNCTION__ = %s\n", __PRETTY_FUNCTION__);
108. }
109. };
110. int
111. main (void)
112. {
113. a ax;
114. ax.sub (0);
115. return 0;
116. }
117.

118.
gives this output:
119.

120.

121.
__FUNCTION__ = sub
122. __PRETTY_FUNCTION__ = void a::sub(int)

124.
These identifiers are variables, not preprocessor macros, and may not
125. be used to initialize
char
arrays or be concatenated with string
126. literals.
