69.
6.29 Cast to a Union Type

70.
71.
72.
A cast to union type looks similar to other casts, except that the type
73. specified is a union type. You can specify the type either with the
74.
union
keyword or with a
typedef
name that refers to
75. a union. A cast to a union actually creates a compound literal and
76. yields an lvalue, not an rvalue like true casts do.
77. See Compound Literals.
78.

79.
The types that may be cast to the union type are those of the members
80. of the union. Thus, given the following union and variables:
81.

82.

83.
union foo { int i; double d; };
84. int x;
85. double y;
86.

87.
both
x
and
y
can be cast to type
union foo
.
88.

89.
Using the cast as the right-hand side of an assignment to a variable of
90. union type is equivalent to storing in a member of the union:
91.

92.

93.
union foo u;
94. /* … */
95. u = (union foo) x ≡ u.i = x
96. u = (union foo) y ≡ u.d = y
97.

98.
You can also use the union cast as a function argument:
99.

100.

101.
void hack (union foo);
102. /* … */
103. hack ((union foo) x);
104.

105.

106.
