68.

as
may write warnings and error messages to the standard error
 69. file (usually your terminal). This should not happen when a compiler
 70. runs
as
automatically. Warnings report an assumption made so
 71. that
as
could keep assembling a flawed program; errors report a
 72. grave problem that stops the assembly.
 73.

 74.
 75.
Warning messages have the format

 77.

 79.

 80.
 81.
(where NNN is a line number). If both a logical file name
 82. (see
.file
) and a logical line number
 83. (see
.line
)
 84. have been given then they will be used, otherwise the file name and line number
 85. in the current assembler source file will be used. The message text is
 86. intended to be self explanatory (in the grand Unix tradition).
 87.

 88.
Note the file name must be set via the logical version of the
.file

 89. directive, not the DWARF2 version of the
.file
directive. For example:
 90.

 91.

 92.
.file 2 "bar.c"

 94. .file "foo.c"
 95. .line 30
 96. error_c_source
 97.

 98.
produces this output:
 99.

 100.

 101.
Assembler messages:
 102. asm.s:2: Error: no such instruction: `error_assembler_source'
