  65. <h4 class="subsection">3.5.1 Simple Assignments</h4>
  66. <p>You may assign to a symbol using any of the C assignment operators:
  67. </p>
  68. <dl compact="compact">
  69. <dt><code><var>symbol</var> = <var>expression</var> ;</code></dt>
  70. <dt><code><var>symbol</var> += <var>expression</var> ;</code></dt>
  71. <dt><code><var>symbol</var> -= <var>expression</var> ;</code></dt>
  72. <dt><code><var>symbol</var> *= <var>expression</var> ;</code></dt>
  73. <dt><code><var>symbol</var> /= <var>expression</var> ;</code></dt>
  74. <dt><code><var>symbol</var> &lt;&lt;= <var>expression</var> ;</code></dt>
  75. <dt><code><var>symbol</var> &gt;&gt;= <var>expression</var> ;</code></dt>
  76. <dt><code><var>symbol</var> &amp;= <var>expression</var> ;</code></dt>
  77. <dt><code><var>symbol</var> |= <var>expression</var> ;</code></dt>
  78. </dl>
  79. <p>The first case will define <var>symbol</var> to the value of
  80. <var>expression</var>. In the other cases, <var>symbol</var> must already be
  81. defined, and the value will be adjusted accordingly.
  82. </p>
  83. <p>The special symbol name &lsquo;<samp>.</samp>&rsquo; indicates the location counter. You
  84. may only use this within a <code>SECTIONS</code> command. See <a href="Location-Counter.html#Location-Counter">Location Counter</a>.
  85. </p>
  86. <p>The semicolon after <var>expression</var> is required.
  87. </p>
  88. <p>Expressions are defined below; see <a href="Expressions.html#Expressions">Expressions</a>.
  89. </p>
  90. <p>You may write symbol assignments as commands in their own right, or as
  91. statements within a <code>SECTIONS</code> command, or as part of an output
  92. section description in a <code>SECTIONS</code> command.
  93. </p>
  94. <p>The section of the symbol will be set from the section of the
  95. expression; for more information, see <a href="Expression-Section.html#Expression-Section">Expression Section</a>.
  96. </p>
  97. <p>Here is an example showing the three different places that symbol
  98. assignments may be used:
  99. </p>
  100. <div class="smallexample">
  101. <pre class="smallexample">floating_point = 0;
  102. SECTIONS
  103. {
  104. .text :
  105. {
  106. *(.text)
  107. _etext = .;
  108. }
  109. _bdata = (. + 3) &amp; ~ 3;
  110. .data : { *(.data) }
  111. }
  112. </pre></div>
  113. <p>In this example, the symbol &lsquo;<samp>floating_point</samp>&rsquo; will be defined as
  114. zero. The symbol &lsquo;<samp>_etext</samp>&rsquo; will be defined as the address following
  115. the last &lsquo;<samp>.text</samp>&rsquo; input section. The symbol &lsquo;<samp>_bdata</samp>&rsquo; will be
  116. defined as the address following the &lsquo;<samp>.text</samp>&rsquo; output section aligned
  117. upward to a 4 byte boundary.
  118. </p>
