  65. <h4 class="subsection">3.5.3 PROVIDE</h4>
  66. <a name="index-PROVIDE"></a>
  67. <p>In some cases, it is desirable for a linker script to define a symbol
  68. only if it is referenced and is not defined by any object included in
  69. the link. For example, traditional linkers defined the symbol
  70. &lsquo;<samp>etext</samp>&rsquo;. However, ANSI C requires that the user be able to use
  71. &lsquo;<samp>etext</samp>&rsquo; as a function name without encountering an error. The
  72. <code>PROVIDE</code> keyword may be used to define a symbol, such as
  73. &lsquo;<samp>etext</samp>&rsquo;, only if it is referenced but not defined. The syntax is
  74. <code>PROVIDE(<var>symbol</var> = <var>expression</var>)</code>.
  75. </p>
  76. <p>Here is an example of using <code>PROVIDE</code> to define &lsquo;<samp>etext</samp>&rsquo;:
  77. </p><div class="smallexample">
  78. <pre class="smallexample">SECTIONS
  79. {
  80. .text :
  81. {
  82. *(.text)
  83. _etext = .;
  84. PROVIDE(etext = .);
  85. }
  86. }
  87. </pre></div>
  88. <p>In this example, if the program defines &lsquo;<samp>_etext</samp>&rsquo; (with a leading
  89. underscore), the linker will give a multiple definition error. If, on
  90. the other hand, the program defines &lsquo;<samp>etext</samp>&rsquo; (with no leading
  91. underscore), the linker will silently use the definition in the program.
  92. If the program references &lsquo;<samp>etext</samp>&rsquo; but does not define it, the
  93. linker will use the definition in the linker script.
  94. </p>
