  69. <h3 class="section">7.11 Deprecated Features</h3>
  70. <p>In the past, the GNU C++ compiler was extended to experiment with new
  71. features, at a time when the C++ language was still evolving. Now that
  72. the C++ standard is complete, some of those features are superseded by
  73. superior alternatives. Using the old features might cause a warning in
  74. some cases that the feature will be dropped in the future. In other
  75. cases, the feature might be gone already.
  76. </p>
  77. <p>While the list below is not exhaustive, it documents some of the options
  78. that are now deprecated:
  79. </p>
  80. <dl compact="compact">
  81. <dt><code>-fexternal-templates</code></dt>
  82. <dt><code>-falt-external-templates</code></dt>
  83. <dd><p>These are two of the many ways for G++ to implement template
  84. instantiation. See <a href="Template-Instantiation.html#Template-Instantiation">Template Instantiation</a>. The C++ standard clearly
  85. defines how template definitions have to be organized across
  86. implementation units. G++ has an implicit instantiation mechanism that
  87. should work just fine for standard-conforming code.
  88. </p>
  89. </dd>
  90. <dt><code>-fstrict-prototype</code></dt>
  91. <dt><code>-fno-strict-prototype</code></dt>
  92. <dd><p>Previously it was possible to use an empty prototype parameter list to
  93. indicate an unspecified number of parameters (like C), rather than no
  94. parameters, as C++ demands. This feature has been removed, except where
  95. it is required for backwards compatibility. See <a href="Backwards-Compatibility.html#Backwards-Compatibility">Backwards Compatibility</a>.
  96. </p></dd>
  97. </dl>
  98. <p>G++ allows a virtual function returning &lsquo;<samp>void *</samp>&rsquo; to be overridden
  99. by one returning a different pointer type. This extension to the
  100. covariant return type rules is now deprecated and will be removed from a
  101. future version.
  102. </p>
  103. <p>The G++ minimum and maximum operators (&lsquo;<samp>&lt;?</samp>&rsquo; and &lsquo;<samp>&gt;?</samp>&rsquo;) and
  104. their compound forms (&lsquo;<samp>&lt;?=</samp>&rsquo;) and &lsquo;<samp>&gt;?=</samp>&rsquo;) have been deprecated
  105. and are now removed from G++. Code using these operators should be
  106. modified to use <code>std::min</code> and <code>std::max</code> instead.
  107. </p>
  108. <p>The named return value extension has been deprecated, and is now
  109. removed from G++.
  110. </p>
  111. <p>The use of initializer lists with new expressions has been deprecated,
  112. and is now removed from G++.
  113. </p>
  114. <p>Floating and complex non-type template parameters have been deprecated,
  115. and are now removed from G++.
  116. </p>
  117. <p>The implicit typename extension has been deprecated and is now
  118. removed from G++.
  119. </p>
  120. <p>The use of default arguments in function pointers, function typedefs
  121. and other places where they are not permitted by the standard is
  122. deprecated and will be removed from a future version of G++.
  123. </p>
  124. <p>G++ allows floating-point literals to appear in integral constant expressions,
  125. e.g. &lsquo;<samp> enum E { e = int(2.2 * 3.7) } </samp>&rsquo;
  126. This extension is deprecated and will be removed from a future version.
  127. </p>
  128. <p>G++ allows static data members of const floating-point type to be declared
  129. with an initializer in a class definition. The standard only allows
  130. initializers for static members of const integral types and const
  131. enumeration types so this extension has been deprecated and will be removed
  132. from a future version.
  133. </p>
