65.
 66.
 67.
There are three directives that begin ‘<samp>.stab</samp>’.
 68. All emit symbols (see Symbols), for use by symbolic debuggers.
 69. The symbols are not entered in the
as
hash table: they
 70. cannot be referenced elsewhere in the source file.
 71. Up to five fields are required:
 72.

 73.

 74.
<var>string</var>

 75.

This is the symbol’s name. It may contain any character except
 76. ‘<samp>\000</samp>’, so is more general than ordinary symbol names. Some
 77. debuggers used to code arbitrarily complex structures into symbol names
 78. using this field.
 79.

 80.

 81.
<var>type</var>

 82.

An absolute expression. The symbol’s type is set to the low 8 bits of
 83. this expression. Any bit pattern is permitted, but
ld

 84. and debuggers choke on silly bit patterns.
 85.

 86.

 87.
<var>other</var>

 101.
If a warning is detected while reading a
.stabd
,
.stabn
,
 102. or
.stabs
statement, the symbol has probably already been created;
 103. you get a half-formed symbol in your object file. This is
 104. compatible with earlier assemblers!
 105.

 111.
The “name” of the symbol generated is not even an empty string.
 112. It is a null pointer, for compatibility. Older assemblers used a
 113. null pointer so they didn’t waste space in object files with empty
 114. strings.
 115.

 116.
The symbol’s value is set to the location counter,
 117. relocatably. When your program is linked, the value of this symbol
 118. is the address of the location counter when the
.stabd
was
